It’s Saturday morning. Gentle sunlight caresses your face and the smell of freshly brewed coffee creeps into your nose. All the stress of the week at work is suddenly forgotten and you enter relaxation mode. You take a bite of the sugar-sweet éclair you ordered earlier and sink into the soft back of your armchair. You’ve done everything right today, because you’ve booked a breakfast in Hamburg from this list of the best Hamburg cafés.
If there’s one thing Hamburg has no shortage of, it’s cool cafés for breakfast and brunch. The choice really is huge and every district has its own highlights. You can take a little trip around the world: From France to Vienna to the USA, this list includes all the breakfast classics.
This Hamburg Café list is a selection of my personal favorites. If you have another good tip, I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
All the cafés mentioned here are well frequented. Getting a seat, especially at the weekend, is often difficult without a reservation. Either make a reservation or come directly when the cafés open. Otherwise you are often left with luck or a long wait.
As I am constantly discovering new cafés, this Hamburg Café List is only an interim list. New entries are constantly being added.
Nothing is better than exploring the city after an excessive breakfast or brunch. Fortunately, there are also a few articles for this:
1. Das Knuth (Ottensen)
Knuth is one of my absolute favorite cafés in Hamburg and has been an institution in Ottensen for more than 10 years. The café is located right next to the Ottenser Mercado and offers a great breakfast selection. My favorite: the cheese breakfast and a bowl of warm rice pudding with cinnamon.

2. Mamalicious (Schanzenviertel)
American-style breakfast is served at Mamalicious on Schulterblatt. Treat yourself to American pancakes, mac’n’cheese or bacon and eggs.
Especially cool for caffeine junkies: you can refill your filter coffee as often as you like.

When Mamalicious is busy, the food can take a little longer, as everything is freshly prepared in the small kitchen. It’s best to come early, when the café is just opening. However, there are no reservations here – it’s first come, first serve.
3. Café Paris (city center)
Café Paris exudes the flair of the city of love from the 1920s. However, some of the interior even dates back to 1882 and this is written large on the wall. Large mirrors, historical utensils and menus from a bygone era hang on the original tiled walls. Two large paintings are enthroned on the ceilings.
It’s usually quite busy and a little noisy here. The prices are quite high for the size of the portions, but you also pay for the special ambience in the Art Nouveau decor.

There are lots of French classics to eat here. I thought it was cool that they also serve homemade jam for breakfast. On public holidays and at weekends, you can enjoy your breakfast here in Hamburg until 3:50 pm.

4. Eclair au café
You can also experience enthusiasm for French pâtisserie & boulangerie at the small but fine Eclair au Café on Lattenstieg. The treats from the pâtisserie are a particular highlight here. There is a colorful selection of tartelettes, eclairs, cheesecakes, tarts and macarons.
5. Sandcafé (Altona)
It’s Arabic at the Sandcafé. There are delicious breakfast platters here with many different Arabic delicacies. A highlight is the sand coffee brewed in sand bowls, which tastes strongly of cardamom.
6. Café Winklers (Altona)
Winklers is located right between Altona and St. Pauli, somewhat hidden in an inconspicuous residential area.
There are many different breakfast combinations for a small price and the coffee is also delicious. And if you get bored while eating breakfast, take one of the many board games from the shelf and play a round.

7. Café and Bar Celona (Eppendorf)
The great café and bar Celona awaits you in Hamburg’s Eppendorf district, where you will immediately feel at home: Comfortable armchairs, lots of green plants and a delicious breakfast.

Especially cool. Every Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. you can enjoy the Basic Instinct breakfast buffet for just €11.95.
8. Café unter den Linden (Schanzenviertel)
Viennese coffee house flair awaits you at Café unter den Linden. The food and all the cakes are fresh and homemade.

9. Kaffee Stark (St. Pauli)
A top breakfast address for vegans is the somewhat more alternative Kaffee Stark in St. Pauli. It serves a vegan breakfast with homemade spreads, tofu, fruit and vegetables for 1 or 2 people. The jam, which is best combined with a croissant, is also homemade. The cake is not to be sneezed at either.

10. Entenwerder1 (Rothenburgsort)
Entenwerder1, on the peninsula of the same name, is a great place for your Hamburg breakfast, especially on sunny days. Because on this floating café you have a free view of the Elbe.

There are small dishes and also a breakfast menu.

11. Coffee Garden Schuldt (Blankenese)
The family-run Kaffeegarten Schuld serves apple crumble with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream and offers a wonderful view of the Elbe and the Blankenese staircase district from the terrace and inside. You should also try the warm waffles.

However, there are no reservations here either, which means that you may have to wait a little at the entrance, especially on Sundays and public holidays, to enjoy your coffee and cake with a view of the Elbe.
12. Café 57 1/2 (Eimsbüttel)
Eimsbüttel is known for its pretty, multi-storey Art Nouveau buildings with large window fronts. In one of them you will find Café 57 1/2, where you can enjoy a daily changing selection of fresh, homemade cakes and waffles.

Breakfast is also served here daily from 9.30 a.m. and it’s something to be proud of.

13. Markt König (St. Pauli)
The Markt König may look a little inconspicuous from the outside because the restaurant is located right next to the Edeka supermarket in the Rindermarkthalle, but it’s still a great place for breakfast and brunch.
I particularly like coming here at Christmas and in winter, because everything is decorated and there’s a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. What’s more, I’ve always been able to get a seat here at the weekend without booking.

I can also recommend the cheese breakfast with the delicious thyme cheese.
14. Klippkroog (Altona-Altstadt)
Klippkroog is a great breakfast and brunch place in the immediate vicinity of Altona station. There is plenty of seating inside and outside. In addition to the classic breakfast dishes, which are also available in vegetarian and vegan versions, you can also fill up on the large selection of cakes here.
15. Adam & Sophie (Billstedt)
Sunday brunch is particularly enjoyable in the light-flooded rooms or the 2 large sun terraces of Adam & Sophie. You also have a large selection of cakes and tarts to choose from.

The restaurant is located in the immediate vicinity of Öjendorfer See. This is ideal for a digestive walk after an extensive brunch.
16. Mutterland Stammhaus (St. Georg)
The Mutterland Stammhaus is not only a delicatessen near the main train station, but also offers a great brunch every day.
First treat yourself to a hearty farmer’s breakfast or a veggie brunch burger “Mama Style” on the lower floor, for example, and then go upstairs to the second floor to buy one of the delicacies from over 200 local manufacturers.
Have you discovered a favorite from the list? What other cool cafés for breakfast in Hamburg should definitely not be missing from this list?
