Can’t travel right now but still looking for an adventure to escape the daily grind? Then get out your smartphone and install one of the games from the point and click adventure list in this article. With these apps, you can experience your next adventure on the living room couch.
Even as a child, I loved playing games like Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island or Sam and Max by Lucas Games on the computer – back then, when games were sometimes spread over more than 10 floppy disks. I could always immerse myself in an adventure and had to solve tricky puzzles to progress through the story. I spent whole days on individual puzzles.
I still enjoy playing these types of games today, but now without floppy disks on my Android smartphone. However, it’s difficult to find good point & click adventure lists online, that are not full with annoying ads. So I’ve created my own list of the absolute best point & click adventures for Android, that I could find. Most of them cost a bit, but if you’re a point & click adventure fan like me, I guarantee that all the games on this list are worth the price.
I give you a Play Store link for each game so that you can buy and download it directly. And since I don’t want to exclude Apple users, I always include the link to the App Store if the game is also available for iPhones and iPads.
I’m also always on the lookout for new adventure games and if I find one, I’ll add it to this list. Of course, I’m also happy to receive tips.
What are point and click adventures?
Point & click adventures are a genre of computer games – in fact one of the oldest – which is still very popular today. Point & Click Adventures are characterized by their controls. As the name suggests, you have to point and click on objects on the screen with the mouse cursor. This gives you new information, allows you to pick up and combine objects or simply talk to characters in the story.
The puzzles in point & click adventures are often quite difficult. But that’s exactly what makes them so appealing. There is usually also an exciting story. The best known are the games from Lucas Games, which no longer exist today. As well as being full of puzzles, they always had a special sense of humor. There are still funny allusions to much of the content of these old classics in newer adventure games – I’m just talking about chainsaw gasoline.
Return to Monkey Island
The fifth edition of what is probably the best point & click adventure series of all time – Monkey Island – is an absolute must. Here you control the pirate Guybrush Threepwood, who once again has to put a stop to his eternal adversary LeChuck.
In contrast to the 3rd and 4th parts, Ron Gilbert, the inventor and creator of Monkey Island 1 and 2, is once again involved in this part, which is why playing Return to Monkey Island brings back all kinds of feelings of nostalgia. And there is also the resolution of what is really behind Monkey Island.
Thimbleweed Park
The game with its old school pixel graphics is strongly reminiscent of the classic Zak Mac Cracken. But the crisp puzzles, the good story and the well-known Lucas Games humor make this game one of the best-rated point & click adventures in the Play Store. Monkey Island inventor Ron Gilbert was also involved in the development of this game.
You play as 5 different characters whose stories are interwoven. The story begins with the two FBI agents Angela Ray and Antonio Reyes, who have to solve a murder case. But soon enough, some plot twists will show you the big picture of the actual story behind Thimbleweed Park. But I don’t want to give too much away here. It’s best to play through it yourself.
If you’re not that experienced, there’s even an easy mode. For puzzle fans, however, I recommend the difficult mode.
Whispers of a Machine
Whispers of a Machine is a sci-fi adventure game in which you play agent Vera Englund in a dystopian world and have to solve various criminal cases. Vera has special cybernetic abilities, such as the ability to recognize whether someone is lying or telling the truth. This results in some interesting concepts that you can use to solve the puzzles in the game.
You can also influence the end of the game with 3 different answer options at some points in the dialogs. This results in a high replay value, as some puzzles can also be solved in different ways.
The game is designed with loving pixel graphics, as we know them from the golden 90s of the genre.
Dexter Stardust : Adventures in Outer Space
In Dexter Stardust, you accompany the taco-loving Dexter Stardust on his adventure around the mysterious planet X in 5 different chapters. Throughout the game there are a few tricky puzzles and cool allusions to old Lucas Games classics such as Indiana Jones or Loom.
Unforseen Incidents
Unforeseen Incidents is one of the newer point-and-click adventures on this list that I’ve played through, and I have to say: I love it.
The graphics are lovingly hand-drawn and the game is well thought out:
- The puzzles are tricky.
- The story is very exciting.
- And the voice acting is perfect.
Adventure fans, what more could you want?
The procession to Calvary
“Pretty weird” is a pretty good description of this game. The game is not only named after the painting of the same name by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, it also looks like it.
You solve puzzles in the classic point & click adventure style in a world of medieval and Renaissance paintings – and it’s a lot of fun. The puzzles are not without their challenges and a special feature is your sword, which you have to use to solve some puzzles.
Captain Brawe
Cool pixel art, good humor and no banal puzzles – that’s Captain Brawe. In this point & click adventure game, you can feel the developers’ love for the old classics of the genre. The atmosphere of some scenes reminded me strongly of Monkey Island, such as the graveyard. The story, on the other hand, is more intergalactic, as you have to uncover a space conspiracy on 4 planets. You sometimes play with 3 characters. Conclusion: Worthwhile. FYI: Real point-and-click adventurers play the hardcore mode.
Flight of the Amazon Queen
Flight of the Amazon Queen is actually a point & click adventure classic from 1995 that you can also play on Android. The game is a bit like a mixture of Indiana Jones and Monkey Island, with lots of movie-like cutscenes. Sounds like an exciting combination? It is.
Simon the Sorcerer 1
What adventure game fan doesn’t know this title? In Simon the Sorcerer, you slip into the boots of Simon, who ends up in a parallel world where he has to find his dog Chippy again.
In this parallel world, you will recognize many well-known fairy tales, encounter dragons and giants and fight the evil sorcerer Sordid. Lots of funny gags and tricky puzzles await you.
Simon the Sorcerer on Android is also an adaptation of the original on Android and will trigger a lot of nostalgia in you if you played the original back then on an Amiga or similar.
Simon the Sorcerer 2
It’s a good thing that some games don’t just have one part. It’s the same with Simon the Sorcerer. Even back then, I thought the second part was even better than the first. Every adventure game fan should have played Simon the Sorcerer 2.
Once again, Simon is sent through a magical wardrobe into a world full of twisted fairy tales and must once again defeat the evil sorcerer Sordid. It’s also cool that the game controls have been optimized for touchscreens.
Angelo and Deemon
Angelo and Deemon is one of the lesser-known games on this list. However, it will certainly captivate you as much as it did me. This is mainly due to the really well-drawn backgrounds. But there is also plenty of humor and tricky puzzles.
You play the blogger Angelo, who accidentally ends up in hell. Always at his side is your sidekick Deemon, who is always good for a funny comment.
Kathy Rain
Kathy Rain comes from the development team responsible for Whispers of a Machine. In this adventure, you can expect a rather dark, but all the more exciting story with logical puzzles and cool retro pixel graphics.
You control the Harley-bound student Kathy, who returns to her old hometown where she has to solve a mystery concerning her grandfather’s inheritance. But many things are not as they seem. I stop here to avoid Spoilers ;) See for yourself.
Samorost 1-3
There are also point & click adventures without a lot of dialog, but with lots of crunchy puzzles. Samorost is one of them. There are also lots of lovingly drawn backgrounds.
It’s cool that there are actually already 3 parts of this great and creative game. Part 1 is now even free on Android. But the other two parts are also worthwhile.
Machinarium
If you haven’t played this game yet, then it’s high time you did. Machinarium has won pretty much every adventure game award there is and is an absolute 2D point-and-click adventure world hit.
You take on the role of a robot that has been banished to the scrap heap. Your goal is to bring the robot back to the city of Machinarium so that he can rescue his robot girlfriend and the city chief and defeat the villains of the Black Cap Brotherhood.
This title was the first major adventure game from the development team Aminata Design. The games from this studio are characterized above all by the lovingly drawn backgrounds, but also by the logical puzzles.
Botanicula
And because we are about to include all the top adventure games from developer Amanita Design in this list, Botanicula should of course not be missing.
Here you get a humorous adventure game about five friendly tree creatures who embark on a journey to save the last seed of their home tree, which is infested with evil parasites.
Game Royal 2
Jan Böhmermann, a German presenter, also seems to be a fan of point and click adventures. Otherwise this game wouldn’t exist. In Game Royal, you control the presenter and have to solve all kinds of puzzles about NEO Magazin Royal. Small spoiler: There are no goats in the story.
The game no longer seems to be available in the Play Store. But you can still download it here. There is also the first part.
Lost Horizon 1 – 2
Lost Horizon Parts 1 and 2 are so-called 2.5D adventures. These are games with 2D-drawn backgrounds in which a 3D character is controlled.
The developer studio Animation Arts from Halle, which also released the classic adventure game Geheimakte Tunguska, is responsible for both parts.
Lost Horizon has a bit of an Indiana Jones feel to it. You play the daredevil Fenton Paddock, a former British officer. His adventures take you to all kinds of locations around the world, such as Morocco, Germany, Tibet and India. The second part takes you to Bavaria, Moscow, England, Jersey, Gotland, Iceland and the mythical Asgard. In addition to the puzzles, the very well-made voice recordings are also a tool in the game.
Broken Sword 5
The name Broken Sword will make the hearts of most point and click adventure fans beat faster. The series is one of the best and most famous in the genre. How good that you can also play some parts of it on your Android smartphone.
A more recent one is part 5, which is split into 2 episodes. You control George Stobbart and Nico Collard to once again uncover secrets and conspiracies. Once again, the whole thing has breathtaking graphics, great puzzles and top voice actors.
By the way. Part 1 (Broken Sword: Director’s Cut) and Part 2 (Broken Sword 2: Remastered) are also available in the Playstore and on iOS
Lucid Dream 1 – 3
In the 3 parts of Lucid Dream, you guide the character through a wondrous dream world. There is an exciting story with unexpected twists that spans all 3 parts. The logic puzzles built into the game are not always easy and sometimes seem a little out of place. But the story motivates you to keep playing and the graphics in combination with the melancholy music create an atmosphere as if you were in a dream yourself.
Secret Files: Sam Peters
Secret Files Tunguska by the German developer studio Animation Arts was one of the point and click adventure games that revived the genre after several years of silence. There were then several parts in a series. Secret File Sam Peters is a side story to the original game which.
But did you know, that you can also play Part 1, 2 and 3 still on your phone?
Monolith
Great news for fans of Animation Arts’ games: in 2024, the development studio released a new hit in the app stores. In Monolith, you control the space traveler Tessa, who, at the beginning of the story, crashes her spaceship on a strange planet. First, you have to find help, but the opening sequence suggests that things are not what they seem.
The graphics of the game’s extraterrestrial worlds are absolutely top-notch and will draw you into the story. I thought it was cool that as you progress through the game, you also get a companion in the form of a robot drone that you can use to additionally scan the area. Later on, you can even use it to play holo-videos to see what happened in a place in the past. You then also have to use this to solve puzzles.
Personally, I found the end of the story a bit boring, but overall, the game gets an absolute recommendation from me.
Tormentum
Things get pretty dark in Tormentum. In a dream world full of nightmares, you control the nameless hero through elaborately designed landscapes inspired by the painters H.R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński.
Milo and the magpies
Although the game is not that long, the lovely graphics with hand-painted backgrounds and the relaxing music create a great atmosphere and soak you into the story.
You control the curious cat Milo on his way home through the neighborhood gardens.
Dozy Dieter
Behind the somewhat clumsy-sounding title lies a small but fine point & click adventure game with beautiful graphics.
You control Dieter, who is a bit of a nutter and looks like he might have smoked a little too much weed. Your main task, in keeping with the game’s title, is to help Dieter fall asleep again. Experienced point-and-click adventure game pros should not need more than 30 minutes for this. But the game is also free – perfect for passing the time in between.
Rusty Lake
Rusty Lake is the name of a development company that makes a lot of really good puzzle games in the style of Room Escapes. One of the best of these is probably Rusty Lake Hotel. But the others are definitely worth playing too, despite not being classic point & click adventures.
Reborne Adventure
In Reborne Adventure, you play Hope, whose parents have been kidnapped. While searching for them, you uncover a mysterious cult.
Throughout the game, you have to make decisions that also have an impact on the course of the story. The game has several chapters, some of which are free and some of which you have to pay for.
Voodoo Detective
At €18, Voodoo Detective is definitely not a bargain and probably only people who are really hardcore point and click adventure fans will buy it.
The game looks great and especially the Caribbean atmosphere in combination with Voodoo is great and reminds me a lot of parts of Monkeys Island. However, Voodoo Detective is nowhere near the class and depth of Monkeys Island.
Nevertheless, it’s fun to solve the mystery, even if the story takes a few strange turns towards the end.
Boxville
This game with its lovingly drawn graphics and the cool logic puzzle games in between reminded me strongly of Machinrium. You play a speechless can living in a box in the city and have to find your dog, who has disappeared in an earthquake.
Lumino City
The special thing about Lumino City is its game world. This is because it is based on a real set that was handmade from cardboard, paper, lights and motors and then filmed.
In this world, a city, you have to find the grandfather of the game character Lumi and solve all kinds of tricky puzzles and talk to the inhabitants. The game has also won several BAFTA Awards for its ingenious visuals.
Conquistadorio
Conquistadorio is a mixture of Grim Fandango and Machinarium with an abstruse story that brings with it a touch of the Spanish Inquisition and an alien invasion. You play a thief who has been thrown out of his coffin and now has to find a new one. Unfortunately, you can’t play through the entire story yet, as only the first part of the adventure is available. Only a demo of the second part has been released so far.
Some of the puzzles are quite difficult and not always easy to understand. It’s good that you can get a comic in each room, which gives you hints on what you have to do. However, the lovingly designed graphics with fluid animations and atmospheric music and matching sound effects are really well done.
Infamous Machine
In Infamous Machine, you control Kelvin, who seems to be a bit slow on the uptake, but this also makes for a few laughs. You have to travel with him to different eras of time and help the outstanding personalities who lived there, such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Beethoven and Issac Newton, to actually discover their ingenious inventions.
The makers of the game definitely have a great sense of humor, which often makes reading the dialogues very entertaining. The puzzles are not easy either, but this makes for a longer game play. All in all, I can definitely recommend this classic point & click adventure game.
Tangle Tower
Tangle Tower is not a classic point & click adventure game, but it still fits perfectly into this list. Because here, too, you have to solve lots of tricky puzzles.
Your goal in the story is to solve a compelling murder case. During your investigation, you will search the two Tangle Towers, question witnesses and uncover many more exciting secrets.
Lost in Play
Lost in Play is a really well-made and lovingly designed point & click adventure game. It’s great fun to explore the story together with the two siblings, solve the well thought-out puzzles and ultimately bring them both home safe and sound.
The hand-drawn animations and the whole combination of sound effects and music are particularly beautiful. I really didn’t want to stop playing. It’s not for nothing that Lost in Play was also named “iPad Game of the Year”.
Beyond the Wall
The saying “small but mighty” applies perfectly to this game. As an experienced point & click adventurer, it won’t take you long to play through Beyond the Wall. But you will love the lovingly designed graphics with the great sound design.
The Cave
The Cave is not a classic point & click adventure game, but rather a kind of jump & run, but with great puzzles and a bit of LucasArts flair. This is not surprising, as the inventor of Monkey Island, Ron Gilbert, also played a key role in The Cave.
The adventure has a high replay value, as you play with a team of 3 characters that you can choose from a group beforehand. Each character has their own special ability and depending on who you choose, certain puzzles can be solved differently.
As you can see, there are quite a few cool point & click adventures on Android. But have I discovered all the good ones yet? Which point & click adventures are still missing from my list? Let me know in the comments. I look forward to your feedback too.
